Every November I get to write about the joys of Thanksgiving. How we should all be thankful for our blessings. This November is especially apropos for our Thanksgiving message, due to a raging young lady named Wilma down here in Florida. We have all been affected by her. Whether we lost power, or lost trees or whatever. The important thing to remember is that as long as we are able to write and read this newsletter, then we are blessed. As long as we are breathing and alive we are blessed.
We have never been promised to have an easy life, we have been promised life, and it’s up to us to make it as easy as possible.
It’s not simple. Thursday after Wilma was probably my hardest day. Another one without power at home, I was getting frustrated. My wife reminded me that we should be thankful, and I knew that. But something was really bothering me. My wife and I came out to the office to clean up and as I opened the door, I knew what my problem was. I was unable to serve. I couldn’t do what I do best—deliver chiropractic care to everyone. Right then I knew that I had to get my doors opened no matter what. I bought a second generator and brought it out to the office. Then power went on Friday morning.
I knew that God wanted me to get back to serving. As the phone started ringing on Friday, my heart raced with joy. As I started adjusting the people who came here, I, once again, knew that I was in the right place, doing the right thing, and serving God and mankind the best way that I can.
I talked to one of the workers who came from Illinois to help with the power. He has been away from home for over 2 months. He was in New Orleans for Katrina and now in Florida for Wilma. What a sacrifice! I don’t care how much he is being paid, it is not enough for that type of sacrifice. Yet he was just happy that he can help. He was fulfilling his mission. What a joy to have a mission like that.
So, I am blessed. We had little to no destruction at our home or office. We had a bit of inconvenience, but so what!!
I get to do what I love, every day, every week and every month of every year. I get to go home and pull out my adjusting table onto the driveway and adjust all my neighbors, who have worked so hard to get our neighborhood back to a safe place for our kids. I get to turn the power on in their bodies, just like the power companies get to turn the power on for our communities. Isn`t that the way it really is. Having the power turned off, whether in our homes or in our bodies, is a BIG inconvenience. We now know how hard our bodies have to work without the power turned on.
I get to have a real Thanksgiving. I get to be a servant to man and God. I get to be a chiropractor.

New Concerns About Tamiflu

With countries around the world spending billions of dollars for billions of doses of Tamiflu, new concerns have surfaced regarding its safety - particularly for children.
Today, the pediatric advisory committee of the Food and Drug Administration met to discuss new reports of serious skin reactions, neuropsychiatric events and deaths associated with taking Tamiflu, Roche`s drug for treating influenza. According to IMS Health, approximately 24.4 million prescriptions for Tamiflu (oseltamivir) were dispensed in Japan between 2001 and 2005; about one-fifth that number - 5.5 million - were filled in the U.S. during the same period. Pediatric prescriptions accounted for 11.6 million in Japan versus 872,386 in the U.S.
As part of its post-marketing surveillance efforts, the FDA assessed reports in the adverse events reporting system (AERS) database, searching for serious and non-serious reactions associated with taking Tamiflu. The FDA approved Tamiflu oral capsules on Oct. 27, 1999 for the treatment of uncomplicated acute influenza in patients aged one year and older, who have had symptoms for no more than two days. A new indication for prevention of influenza in adults and children 13 years and older was approved on Nov. 20, 2000. The oral suspension was approved on Dec. 14, 2000. (1) Pediatric exclusivity was granted to Roche for Tamiflu on March 22, 2004. (2)
The adverse events query covered the period from March 22, 2004 through April 22, 2005 - the 13 months post-release. There were 1,184 case reports for adverse reactions posted from sources both domestic and abroad. Nearly 16 percent of the events occurred in children (n = 190). It should be noted that the AERS is widely underutilized by physicians and the actual number of adverse events is likely to have been much higher. (3)

Write to your Congressmen/women to let them know that both the Senate (S1873) and House (HR3970) versions of the bill must be defeated, 2. Call Congress. Further, you flatly reject the creation of a secret agency which would operate without public oversight to created and compel the use of vaccines whose composition, side effects and hazards are not only unknown, but would be kept permanently hidden from the public. Let them know that you will not tolerate the loss of compensation for harm and the loss of a trial by a jury of your peers to determine the nature and extent of any such harm to you or your loved ones and that a vote for these bills -- or others like them -- is completely unacceptable if the member of Congress wants to stand for re-election. Make no mistake about it: Bird flu vaccines do not exist and cannot exist for some 6-18 months. Whatever you are vaccinated with will be experimental and therefore dangerous. With no liability to deter them, the vaccine makers can try anything they want or use any shoddy techniques they like and you cannot claim any harm has been done to you for the purposes of compensation. Not only that, the contents of these forced vaccinations for who-knows-what are secret! So whether the vaccines contain · Stealth viruses (which many now do) · Squalene (a major threat to life and health as many a Gulf War Veteran knows to his/her endless distress) · Mercury · Formaldehyde · Aluminum or other known toxins · Live viruses which should have been killed or · Other contaminants, not only will you never know, you can be forced to submit to vaccination and accept whatever comes next. The issue here is two fold: your health and your health freedom. Would it shock you to know that serious scientists question the very premise of public health through vaccination? That the sacred cow of “herd immunity” (diseases go away because all of us have been vaccinated) is not very good science and, because of the dangers of vaccines, terrible medicine? Vaccination is neither effective nor safe although we have been told that both are true for so long that their effectiveness and safety seems self-evident. The truth, however, is far more disquieting. And for untested vaccines, the story is worse. Much worse. Here are some sites to which you can go to get in-depth information about this troubling question: Even if you believe in vaccines for you and yours, the idea of a compulsory vaccine program administered by a secret agency with zero accountability to you and the same legal liability for the companies who make potentially lethal injections (zero once again) is a major threat to your liberty and mine. Laibow, MD Medical Director -------------------- Caesareans at highest rate ever as more mothers say no to vaginal births Florida outpaces national average By Nancy McVicar Health Writer November 17, 2005 More women than ever are having Caesarean sections -- almost 1.2 million nationwide last year -- to bring their babies into the world despite a national campaign to reduce the rate, federal officials reported Wednesday. The Caesarean delivery rate in 2004 rose to 29.1 percent of all births, a 6 percent increase over the previous year for the major surgery and the highest rate ever reported in the United States, according to a report by the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the National Center for Health Statistics. In Florida, the rate was even higher -- 32 percent in 2004, up from 29 percent in 2002 -- according to the Florida Department of Health. South Florida had the highest rates in the state: Miami-Dade, 39 percent; Broward, 37.6 percent; and Palm Beach County, 33 percent. Many of the surgeries were necessary, but a growing number were done by choice of the mother, officials said. Only five years ago, federal health officials worried that too many C-sections were being performed and set a goal of reducing the rate to no more than 15 percent by the year 2010. The trend, however, is going in the opposite direction. Fears of malpractice lawsuits if a vaginal delivery goes wrong, the preferences of mothers and physicians, and the risks of attempting vaginal births after Caesareans are some of the reasons attributed to the increase, but in South Florida there are added reasons. Dr. Mary Jo O`Sullivan, professor emeritus and former director of obstetrics at the Miller School of Medicine, University of Miami, said South Florida`s population mix contributes to the high number of C-sections. High numbers of African-American women have complications when they go into labor, she said, and similar problems occur among women who immigrate from Central and South America and the Caribbean. "[For] black women, one of the many trials they have in life is that when the baby presents in labor, it usually presents with a larger diameter of the head than in Caucasians. They also have a higher rate of complications with pregnancies, due to diet and lack of prenatal care," O`Sullivan said. "A woman from Peru, who could have delivered vaginally there, after she`s been in this country for a while, the baby is bigger than it would have been in Peru," O`Sullivan said, attributing the differences to better nutrition in the United States. "And then there`s the boutique kind of thing, where women don`t want to be exposed to anything that affects the pelvic floor and could lead to incontinence," she said. "I don`t understand it. It`s major surgery. Any incontinence that occurs after labor and delivery resolves within six weeks to three months." As with any surgical procedure, C-sections carry a risk of infection, and death occurs in about 20 of every 100,000 C-sections. Twenty years ago, few women asked for Caesarean sections, said Dr. Sarah Kilpatrick, of the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists. Today, she said, a growing number of women are demanding them, she said. "The public gets the sense that it`s like a zipper -- they open you and then close you back up," she said. The C-section rate increased for all births, even those that involved healthy, first-time pregnancies with a full-term, single child, according to the new report. The government also reported that more than a half-million infants were born pre-term, less than 37 weeks` gestation, in 2004, which is another record. And the proportion of infants with a low birth weight rose to 8.1 percent in 2004, from 7.9 percent the year before. Many pre-term babies are delivered by C-section, O`Sullivan said. Increases in multiple-fetus pregnancies also add to the C-section rate, said Joyce Martin, an epidemiologist who co-wrote the report. For decades, C-sections were done in only a small fraction of births. In 1970, the national rate was 5 percent. Then it rose, surpassing 20 percent by the mid-1980s. The trend temporarily reversed in the early 1990s, partly because HMOs pressured doctors to curtail unnecessary procedures. But by the late 1990s, health insurers had cut back their C-section control efforts. Also, doctors became worried by studies that showed that women who deliver vaginally after having a C-section earlier suffer a ruptured uterus, a potentially lethal complication for both mother and child, in about 1 percent of such cases. Some hospitals have banned vaginal deliveries after C-section, said Tonya Jamois, president of the International Caesarean Awareness Network, an advocacy organization. Those cases included delirium, hallucinations, convulsions and encephalitis. "Clearly, any time you get a report of a death or a serious occurrence, you want to look into it," said Dr. Murray Lumpkin, the deputy commissioner of the Food and Drug Administration. "Going into the discussion tomorrow, based on the information we have right now, we cannot say definitively there is a causal relation between the drug and the children`s death." The FDA sought and received more information from the Swiss pharmaceutical company Roche and Japanese health authorities about the deaths in advance of Friday`s meeting, but has not initiated any action, spokeswoman Susan Bro said. Complicating the issue is that many of the death and adverse reaction reports list symptoms commonly associated with the flu, Lumpkin said. "It is very difficult, when the underlying disease causes what it is being reported, to figure out: Is it the underlying disease? Is it the drug?" said Lumpkin, adding that "millions and millions" of patients have safely used the drug to treat the flu. A Roche spokesman did not immediately return an e-mail message seeking comment. Roche has supplied the FDA with two additional studies it commissioned that evaluated the safety of Tamiflu in pediatric patients. "Roche has carefully reviewed these events and has concluded that a causal link cannot be established," the company said in a statement released on Monday. However, the Japanese distributor of the Roche-patented drug told health officials it could not rule out a link between Tamiflu and the deaths. Tamiflu is extensively used to treat children in The Tamiflu is one of the few drugs believed effective in treating bird flu, which health officials fear could spark a pandemic should it mutate into a form easily passed from human to human. Blane Walter Advertising Being the son of Robert Walter, longtime chief of drug wholesaler giant Cardinal Health, probably didn`t hurt. But Walter, 34, also has a great sense of timing: He got into the pharmaceutical advertising business just as the Food & Drug Administration relaxed direct marketing rules in 1997, unleashing a flood of ad dollars that turned drugs into famous brands. The pill industry spent $4.4 billion last year on ads, says TNS Media. InChord Communications, Walter`s Westerville, Ohio firm, got in early, using basketball legend Earvin (Magic) Johnson to promote GlaxoSmithkline`s HIV drug Combivir and landing Eli Lily`s Prozac account in the late 1990s. Last month InChord sold out to Ventiv Health, which provides consulting and marketing to pharmas. The income is Walter`s cash share of the capital gain. $4.7 million Dan S. Wilford Nonprofit Hospital chief Perhaps the most richly compensated head of a medical nonprof, Wilford retired in 2002 after building Houston`s Memorial Hermann from a three-community outfit into a 12-hospital system that earned $117 million on revenues of $1.8 billion in 2003, the latest year it reported. The hospital says his compensation that year "was not typical, as it included reporting of accrued benefits from Mr. Wilford`s 18 years of service as well as retirement benefits." (Herbert Pardes, chief of New York-Presbyterian Hospital, cleared $3.4 million in 2003.) If all this strikes you as unusual for a tax- exempt organization, you`re not alone. Last year the Internal Revenue Service started looking into the pay packages of nonprof executives. In April IRS Commissioner Mark Everson told the Senate that "excess compensation by an exempt organization is not permissible." But what is excessive? $124.8 million William McGuire Health Insurance As the nation`s highest-paid health care executive, McGuire, chief of UnitedHealth Group, has built the nation`s second- biggest such insurer and returned an average 33% a year to shareholders since he took over in 1991. Part of that success is helping companies keep costs down. Meantime, McGuire has built himself quite a stash, collecting lots of stock options. Last fiscal year he pocketed $115 million on them--and at year-end had an unexercised hoard worth $1 billion. Doctors Within Borders Some medics make a decent but hardly outrageous living. Source: Medical Group Management Association. $55,502 Mary Ann Carr Nurse Practitioner Carr, 53, is the first line of care for 1,800 or so patients annually in rural Alsea, Ore. Her one-woman, nonprofit clinic is open to patients 221/2 hours per week. She works 45 hours a week, doing exams, writing prescriptions, ordering lab tests, X rays, MRIs and so on. Medicaid covers one-fourth of her patients, another third have Medicare or supplementary insurance, and the rest are underinsured or without coverage. Nobody gets turned away. Says she: "My husband keeps warning me that when I retire no one`s going to want to work this job for this salary." $18.6 million Nicholas Perricone Dermatologist Perricone uses his medical credentials to flog his three-step program--special diet, cosmeceuticals and nutritional supplements-- in his bestselling books and on public TV fundraisers. You can find most of his products, which are largely unregulated by the feds, on his Web site and in his Manhattan store. Perricone continues to argue that his stuff can help "take off 10 years in 28 days" and that his program provides "long-term age-defying benefits." Perricone enjoys his income. Divorce filings say he spends $245,000 a month, including $4,117 on apparel and $24,000 on business travel and entertainment. Documents show he owns two homes, one a $2.6 million pad in Ormand, Fla. Perricone is also generous, pledging $5 million to his medical school, Michigan State University. $5 million Phu (Peter) Luong Alleged Medicare Fraudster As the founder of United Medical Supply in Huntington Beach, Calif., Luong was doing very well for himself until last March. That`s when he was indicted for submitting $24 million in fraudulent billings to Medicare. The U.S. Attorney in Los Angeles says the government paid UMS $14 million for motorized wheelchairs and nutrition products that were medically unnecessary--and charges that Luong`s employees solicited and drove Medicare beneficiaries to doctors who wrote bogus prescriptions for them. Luong has pleaded not guilty. Nevertheless, he has had to do without some of his toys. The feds have seized an estimated $3 million in assets, including a $185,000 yacht and a $118,000 Rolls-Royce. $3 million Ansbert Gadicke Venture Capitalist The odds of backing a win-ner aren`t great in this business, and cashing in on one usually takes three to five years. But Gadicke, an M.D. and general partner of MPM Capital, which has invested $2 billion in biotech and drug outfits, scored big time in no time. In April Pfizer bought Idun Pharmaceuticals, a portfolio company in phase II-B clinical trials for a hepatitis C treatment, giving MPM a 442% return on a $22 million investment in nine months. "We are making very significant amounts of money for our investors," says Gadicke. $5 million Garth Fisher Plastic Surgeon Plastic surgeons don`t have insurance companies policing their rates because insurance almost never covers their services. Fisher charges $10,000 to straighten noses and as much as $50,000 for a face-lift. Still interested? You`ve got up to a two-year wait to get into his Beverly Hills office, thanks to his appearances on ABC`s Extreme Makeover. He also shows up on Oprah, Good Morning America and Larry King Live whenever he can. And he manages to perform 8 to 15 procedures--from neck- lifts and cheek implants to breast enhancements--each week, supplementing his income with sales of $30 DVDs touting the virtues of scalpel sculpting and by hitting the speaking circuit. $3 million Setty Viralam Neonatologist This west Palm Beach, Fla. specialist did well when he sold out his practice in 1998, but today he`s fighting the taxman in court. An IRS audit denied him $264,000 of deductions he took that year -- supposedly into a foundation that his lawyer claims made loans to students who intended to go into charitable activities or paid them for volunteer work. $48,000 Robert Levin Foreign Aid Doctor The income figure is a little misleading. For six months during 2003, Levin, a family physician from Minneapolis, earned $7,200 working for Doctors Without Borders in war-torn northern Uganda. Working ten hours a day, seven days a week in sweltering conditions, he nursed severely malnourished kids and worked in camps in the line of fire. Back home, to make ends meet, Levin worked two part-time jobs, teaching family medicine at a community program of the University of Minnesota and working an emergency room in a rural part of the state. Says Levin, 40: "I felt like I needed to go practice medicine where people were really in desperate need." $77.9 million Edwin Mac Crawford Pharmacy Benefit Manager Crawford runs Caremark, the nation`s largest (by market cap) pharmacy benefit manager, which helped fill 484 million prescriptions for health care plan members last year. By building a network of 60,000 retail pharmacies and using Caremark`s purchasing power, Crawford has kept drug prices in check. But like other PBMs, Caremark is spending as much time in the courtroom as in the nation`s medicine cabinets these days. In September the company paid $137.5 million, settling a six- year federal investigation into kickback allegations, among others, made against a unit Caremark acquired last year. The feds and four states are expected to join a whistleblower fraud claim. $2 million W.J. (Billy) Tauzin Lobbyist The former Louisiana Congressman became chief of the Pharmaceutical Research & Manufacturers of America, the drug industry`s lobbying group, at the start of the year. As onetime head of a House committee, Tauzin helped create the new $720 billion Medicare prescription benefit. Now he is trying to persuade his former colleagues that what`s good for his new constituents is good for America. Example: an intense effort on Capitol Hill to keep generic-drug makers from getting licenses to produce patented flu vaccines. $6 million Mark Bogart Inventor While completing a Ph.D. in biology at UC, San Diego, Bogart filed patent 4,874,693 in 1986. Since the mid-1990s this 55-year- old, a Hawaii resident, has been collecting licensing fees on the common procedure for testing the blood of pregnant women for certain indications of Down syndrome in a fetus. Bogart never did any testing himself, and Michael Watson, executive director of the American College of Medical Genetics, says his innovation was already largely known when he filed the patent. True or not, big outfits like Quest Diagnostics pay him a royalty each time they test, approximately $6 a pop. Bogart`s patent runs out in October 2006. --N.V. with the business reporting class at UC, Berkeley`s Graduate School of Journalism.
