May 25, 2005

Kid’s Unlimited is a monthly, or semi-monthly, newsletter of various articles, funnies, tidbits and opinions relating to our children and chiropractic.  My opinions will always be in red and italicized.  Please feel free to share the appropriate articles with patients, friends, and other chiropractors.  I never buy any lists or put names on my email list unless the names were submitted to me directly.  If you wish to be removed from my list, just reply with the word “remove” in the subject line.

Thank you… Together we will make a difference.

Yours in Chiropractic, Armand Rossi

Next week is my birthday.  The earth has now traveled around the sun 54 times in my lifetime.  Every year I take stock in what I have accomplished in the last year.  I can truly say that personally, I`ve accomplished many things.  My family is closer to me than ever. I have new grandbabies.  I am re-modeling my house and it is going great.  I am loved and continue to love those dear to me more than ever.  I still have a part that bothers me.  What have I done for humanity?  Certainly, I`ve tried to make a difference.  Every time I really look at things, I realize that I really haven`t done much.  People are still sick.  They still look for outside-in cures rather than inside-out correction. There is still hatred, violence and war.  I could really get depressed.

Rather than looking at the doom and gloom, I choose to look at the expression of the universe becoming more "God centered".  I choose to see the glass not only half full but in the process of filling up.  Will there always be hatred, violence and war?  Possibly, although I hope not.  I choose to thank God for the problems.  These are the lessons we grow by and the catalysts for love and light.  I am blessed  that I`ve seen the earth go around this many times.  I know that by the time it goes around again, everything will be better and better.

One of the best articles I have every read.  From ChiroQuestions by Harvey and Jane Fish DC`s. To be included on their list email drsfish@ix.netcom.com .

I have often wondered how our great profession reached its current status in the world. As a starting point I review the history of how chiropractic started. Hearing restored by an application of principle. The very beginning of "hard bone on soft nerve." Simple and complete for it`s time. Yes, DD did write about the spiritual and religious aspects of what he was doing but what caught on-to my reading- was the mechanical aberration. Move the bone off the nerve and restoration of life occurred. Like I said, it was a very simple time.

When I first started going to a chiropractor, brought to a chiropractor is the more accurate term since I was 11 and couldn`t drive, it was to one who "moved the bone". This was the mid 1960`s. Thousands of people walked through his converted garage and had the power turned on. They came and listened to a lay lecture about vertebral subluxations interfering with life`s expression from the brain to the body. Interference caused by a hard bone on a soft nerve. Simple.

Back then people brought other people to the office. In droves. The waiting area was SRO- standing room only. Sure, it was a GPC practice, a box on the wall phenomena. No insurance. No fancy pamphlets. No office manager, public relations CA, or consultant on call. Neuropatholators were around as were spine models but that was about it. Simple.

Then the 1970`s and 1980`s came around. Insurance reimbursement was the rage. Medicare reimbursed chiropractors for caring for senior citizens but, and this is interesting, only for correcting vertebral subluxations. Ironic because it was Medicare that initially gave the vertebral subluxation legs. Against the odds they validated the existence of the vertebral subluxation. You couldn`t get paid if you didn`t correct subluxations and, as the logic follows, they must exist because you received a check. Other insurance companies got into the act. Creative billing accompanied by justification and rationalization for our new found financial (and some say, professional) status was all that was talked about. The medics did it, why shouldn`t we? "What code you using?" was the greeting to a colleague now. It was the era of the seminar and the birth (in a big way) of consultants. No longer were schools able to teach students how to be chiropractors. Pre and post graduate seminars were necessary now figure out how to be successful. Parker, DE, Wes Trout, Renaissance, and others brought chiropractors together to learn what was in the way of the simplicity of success. Patter was learned, office procedures instituted, and offices transformed. They often linked our philosophy with science in a well produced educational format. The Vertebral Subluxation Complex or VSC was born. Purpose was still being spoken even while a count of those in the seminar rooms showed greater meeting attendance in Insurance Coding and even Acupuncture than in philosophy. Discussions in the hallways were often more about boosting the bottom line than in giving a better adjustment. State boards continued to demand the institution of continuing education as a means of raising the status by which they believed we were being held by the public and the medical establishment. Boards started punishing chiropractors for simply telling the story or letting a patient`s testimonial be published.

Simple was fast falling away in favor of complex.

The 1990`s saw more of the same. Small cadre`s of men continued to get together to map out their idea of the future of chiropractic. Away from the simple and straight (no pun intended) into the complex. One. Two. Three. Four parts of the National Board. Millions into the testers coffers. No evidence of competency or professional skills benefiting mankind were ever shown to be evident as a result of what was being asked in a test booklet or practical exam. Schools began to not only teach outside the original ideas of chiropractic but actually changed their names to reflect the lowered level of importance placed on the vertebral subluxation. Now it was natural healing that was the rage. The "New Age" had returned (I always thought it was the Old Age that had returned). Chopra and Weil were heroes to chiropractors. Prattling our philosophy of life on the stage trying to accomplish with needles and herbs what chiropractors could do with our hands. Research that was done had little to do with chiropractic principles and more to do with chiropractic techniques applied to the medicalized treatment of a limited number of disorders: menstrual cramps, back aches, neck pain.

Once again, simple had become more complex, very complex.

So here in the early part of the 21st century we can already see much of where we may be headed. More simple into complex. That same small cadre of men were still doing mischief. Closing schools, demanding more money for tests, trying to pull all continuing education under one roof with one approving body, the punishment of chiropractors who would dare "treat" asymptomatic" patients or-god forbid- children, trying to create a one world chiropractic governing body, attempting to sue our way to equality, and on and on and on. We`ve also seen the metamorphosis of chiropractic care into something called wellness.

Simple was, do I daresay, being transformed into complex.

Now I don`t have a major problem with the push towards a wellness model. Early on we called something similar the five facets of health. Remember? Here`s a refresher for those who don`t: Good food, Exercise, Rest, PMA (positive mental attitude) and, of course, chiropractic care. Everyone I knew taught their patients the mantra. Overnight I somehow was transformed from a chiropractor into an expert on sleeping and choosing the right bed. I was an exercise guru and nutritional expert rolled into one. And of course I had a chronic condition of PMA. Rather than be seen as the person to go to for correction of nerve interference, I was being morphed into a Health & Wellness coach. Sure, people will benefit from my knowledge. But it seems overly complex to me now. I can`t seem to remember the grade I received in my stretching class. My nutritional instructor in school spent most of the quarter talking about coffee enemas. It seems that it was society that was directing the changes that were taking place around me. It was an outside-in and not an inside out flow that was moving chiropractic from the simple to the complex. Baby boomers were older therefore I had to change or be left behind.

I don`t buy it.

Not a drop.

In my opinion it was the shift away from our earlier and simpler times that has caused much of the problems we have today. Under the name of chiropractic all manner of practices are/were incorporated into our offices. The philosophy was still there but it got diluted by mixing it with other practices. We stopped doing one thing well and tried to do it all. Even today, with chiropractors wanting to prescribe drugs or do what MD`s do, we`re still taking the simple and making it complex. That small cadre of men, who ultimately are nothing more than suppressive and mad with power, continues to try and dictate our future. We can`t let that happen because once it does chiropractic will cease to exist. The practice of chiropractic will become so complex that the subluxation will be relegated to a footnote in our profession`s history. Bad backs, anyone?

Keep It Simple, Smartguy. People are still the same as they were in DD`s time. Why did we change? Why might you have changed? Had we been able to keep it pure and unsullied would chiropractic be a more dominant force in society today? Are we moving in a good direction? Are you still telling the story?

Yours for the principle,

Harvey

ELEVEN STATES SUE EPA TO BLOCK SECOND MERCURY RULE

KP Stoller, MD, delivered a CD that contains enough evidence to implicate several federal agencies in the deliberate cover-up, deception of the public and Congress in regards to using mercury (thimerosal) in vaccinations.

Congressman Weldon ("Mercury-Free Vaccines Act of 2005" [HR 881]) and Burton have been fighting a good fight but it is doubtful that any efforts to ban thimerosal or make any headway against these prevaricating agencies will succeed. Under the guise of "Protecting America in the War on Terror" seven US Senators (Gregg, Frist, Sessions, DeWine, Allen, Santorum, McConnell, and DeMint) have introduced S. 3 which calls for many sweeping changes in pharmaceutical product liability, vaccine regulation, vaccine policy, vaccine research and the Vaccine Injury Compensation Act. It would prevent States from banning mercury in vaccines or in regulating drugs and biologics. It would prevent States from protecting and warning citizens that mercury- containing vaccines or other drugs are dangerous.

KP Stoller, MD, has been advising, under radar, the White House Medical Unit`s Administrator. The administrator`s daughter became autistic after receiving vaccines. On Tuesday night, May 17, 2005, he naively asked Dr. Stoller why the FDA and CDC had been perpetrators in this travesty. Dr. Stoller told him the pharmaceutical companies fund a large part of the FDA`s budget and that the CDC co-owns patents on vaccines with manufacturers. Many who work at the CDC are co-employees of vaccine pharma houses. The situation has become so criminally incestuous that it needs to be completely revamped.

If there were ever a time for State`s rights to protect citizens, this is it. They need to protect us from the largest iatrogenic caused public health disaster in the history of our country and the new EPA ruling that will further poison us with mercury emmisions from power-generating companies.

Cap and Trade Rule Will Perpetuate "Hot Spots" of Mercury Deposition From Power Plants. Consequently, Attorney Generals and an Environmental Protection Secretary representing 11 states filed a lawsuit Wednesday, May 18, challenging a new federal Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) rule that establishes a cap-and-trade system for regulating harmful mercury emissions from power plants.

The rule was published May 18, 2005 in the Federal Register. The states previously filed suit against a separate EPA rule published March 29 that removed power plants from the list of pollution sources subject to stringent pollution controls under the federal Clean Air Act. EPA announced both the de- listing rule and the cap-and-trade rule on March 15. The trading scheme established by the rules will allow power plants to elect, rather than reducing their own mercury emissions, to purchase emissions credits from plants that reduce emissions below targeted levels.

The New Jersey Attorney General filed the suit yesterday in the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit on behalf of the coalition of 11 states listed below. Cap-and-trade emission trading programs, while sometimes negotiable for general air pollutants such as sulfur dioxide and nitrogen oxides, are absolutely inappropriate for mercury because they can allow localized deposition of mercury to continue unabated near plants that choose not to reduce emissions, perpetuating hot spots and hot regions that can significantly impact the health of individual communities.

Through mercury deposition, mercury enters the food chain and ultimately is consumed by humans, resulting in severe harm, particularly when ingested by pregnant or nursing mothers or young children. Children can suffer permanent brain and nervous system damage from exposure to even low levels of mercury, which frequently occurs in utero. Mercury exposure can cause attention and language deficits, impaired memory, and impaired visual and motor functions.

Coal-fired power plants are the largest source of uncontrolled mercury emissions, generating 48 tons of mercury emissions per year nationwide. EPA studied the health hazards posed by toxic emissions from power plants, including mercury, and determined in 2000 that power plants must be regulated under Section 112 of the Clean Air Act, which requires that "maximum achievable control technology" (MACT) be used to control those emissions. The de-listing rule that EPA published on March 29 exempts power plants from regulation under Section 112, reversing EPA`s prior determination that the strictest controls are necessary to protect public health.

A strict MACT standard, as required by the Clean Air Act, would reduce mercury emissions to levels approximately three times lower than the cap established in the cap-and- trade rule EPA published today. EPA`s cap-and-trade rule will reduce mercury emissions from power plants from the current level of 48 tons per year to 15 tons per year. MACT controls, on the other hand, would reduce emissions at each facility by about 90 percent, reducing total mercury emissions from power plants to about 5 tons per year. Moreover, the new EPA rule extends the deadline for compliance from 2008 to 2018, with full reductions not expected until at least 2026. How many babies and pregnant woman is it okay to poison for power plants to profit?

Exposure to the most toxic form of mercury comes primarily from vaccines. But most are told that it is through fish and shellfish that have been mercury-contaminated from power plants and other industry emmissions. However, fish advisories, which have been adopted by EPA, are not an adequate substitute for appropriate regulation of mercury emissions under the Clean Air Act.

Scientists estimate up to 600,000 children may be born annually in the United States with neurological problems leading to poor school performance because of mercury exposure while in the womb. Fish from waters in 45 of our 50 states have been declared unsafe to eat as a result of poisoning from mercury from power plants and other industry.

At least 40 percent of lakes in New Hampshire and Vermont contain fish mercury levels in excess of federal standards. In New Jersey, there are mercury consumption advisories for at least one species of fish in almost every body of water in the state.

New Jersey Attorney General Peter C. Harvey said: "These rules are deeply flawed and contrary both to science and the law. Mercury is a potent neurotoxin that damages the developing brains of fetuses and young children. EPA has failed to meet its obligation under the Clean Air Act to adopt rules that will protect our children from toxic power plant emissions." Contact: Peter Aseltine (609) 292-4791

California Attorney General Bill Lockyer said: "All of our communities, all of our women and children, deserve the strongest possible protections against exposure to this significant public health hazard. The government has a duty to provide that protection. With these rules, the Bush Administration has failed to honor that duty and, in the process, not been forthright with the American people." Contact: Teresa Schilling (916) 324-5500

Connecticut Attorney General Richard Blumenthal said: "These regulations present an unacceptable risk to the health of children and pregnant women. A cap-and-trade system will concentrate mercury contamination in hot zones, unnecessarily exposing millions to this deadly toxin. The Bush administration allowed this rule by illogically reversing an earlier finding that mercury should be subject to stringent rules governing hazardous substances. In fact, there is no question that mercury is a proven killer, and this rule aids and abets its deadly effects." Contact:  Christopher Hoffman(860)808-5324

Massachusetts Attorney General Tom Reilly said: "These new rules leave young children and pregnant women at risk of exposure to mercury. Instead of addressing the issue of mercury pollution head on, the EPA has chosen to suppress key documents about potentially more effective alternatives and release rules that undercut the Clean Air Act. The EPA must do more to protect the people of Massachusetts and the United States from toxic pollution." Contact: Sarah Nathan (617) 727-2543

New Mexico Attorney General Patricia A. Madrid said: "Once again, the Bush Administration fails to demonstrate concern for the health and safety of our citizens. The EPA has adopted a mercury emissions rule that effectively exempts power plants from doing what they can to limit the emissions of chemicals that are known to cause specific dangerous birth and developmental defects. The EPA`s action allows these dangers to continue unabated in some communities, and that is why this rule must be challenged and overturned." Contact: Sam Thompson (505) 222-9174

New York Attorney General Eliot Spitzer said: "Mercury is a toxin that harms people and pollutes the environment. This EPA rule does not do nearly enough to reduce mercury pollution from power plants. The people and the environment deserve much better protection from this poison." Contact: Marc Violette (518) 473-5525

Pennsylvania Environmental Protection Secretary Kathleen A. McGinty said: "The administration`s mercury proposal is insufficiently protective of public health. EPA was right in 2000 in recognizing mercury as a hazardous air pollutant that needs to be regulated strictly. They are wrong now in changing course. President Bush speaks of a `culture of life.` The Administration`s actions here, however, do not match these words and the rule falls far short of what is required to protect vulnerable young lives." Contact: Kurt Knaus (717) 787-1323

Vermont Attorney General William Sorrell said: "EPA told us in 2000 that mercury was a hazardous air pollutant that had to be strictly regulated. Now they are effectively telling us it`s not that bad. We simply cannot let them get away with sweeping this problem under the rug." Contact: Erick Titrud (802) 828-5518

Wisconsin Attorney General Peg Lautenschlager said: "Years ago, EPA listed mercury as a hazardous air pollutant because of its serious health and environmental effects. Efforts underway now by EPA to exempt mercury from the achievable controls required by law are wrong-headed and dangerous." Contact: Brian Rieselman (608) 266-1220

Athletes have been benefiting from Chiropractic care for many years; however, it has only recently been receiving attention from the media. Athletes of all types, from the weekend warrior to the world-class athlete, utilize Chiropractic because it is a drug-free way to better health and performance.

Chiropractic adjustments help ensure that the body functions as efficiently as possible, which can maximize healing and recovery from all types of injuries.

“I would estimate that in excess of 90% of all world-class athletes use Chiropractic care to prevent injuries and to increase their performance potential.”

31 percent of NFL teams use chiropractors in an official capacity as part of their staffs and a full 77 percent of the trainers have referred to a chiropractor for evaluation or treatment. A survey of certified NFL trainers revealed that 100 percent of them agree that players will use chiropractic care without referral from the team medical staff. 1

The science of Chiropractic is founded on the premise that a proper nerve supply is essential to controlling and regulating the functioning of the human body.

The nervous system controls every activity in the body by sending and receiving nerve messages and is protected by the bones of the spine called vertebrae. When the spine is in its optimal structural position, the nerves are protected and optimal communication exists between the central nervous system and the rest of the body. The vertebra of the spine are susceptible to certain stresses and forces, which can cause them to lose their proper position. These minor misalignments of the spine, which are known as “vertebral subluxations”, cause nerve interference and weaken the entire structure of the spine. Athletic training can often jar and misalign the spinal column, because the spine is at the center of the body. Impact to the legs, feet, head, shoulders and torso often radiates to the spine.

Doctors of Chiropractic detect and correct vertebral subluxations by physically adjusting the spine. This restores the spine and nervous system to a more optimal level of function, which maximizes the body`s performance and healing potential.

Anyone who engages in athletics can benefit from regular Chiropractic checkups to ensure that their spine is balanced and free from structural stress and subluxations. When the spinal column is brought into balance and alignment, the body`s nervous system and body biomechanics (posture) are maximized.

"Changes in the optimal spinal position produce spinal pathologies and loss of function. Spinal pathologies destroy joint reflexes, arc fibers and cause nerve impedance" 2

"Postural strength and coordination are essential for injury prevention and sports performance" 3

Thomas Harris, MD The Sports Medicine Guide

"Posture affects and moderates every physiological function, from breathing to nervous system function, and despite the considerable evidence that posture affects physiology and function, the significant influence of posture on health is not addressed by most physicians" 4

American Journal of Pain Management

In an average year, 25 million people visit a doctor for injuries that they suffer as a result of athletics. In professional sports, injury is the number one reason for early retirement. Overall, 67 billion dollars is spent each year for the treatment of athletic injuries. 5

U.S. News and World Report

There are essentially two categories that athletic injuries fall into: acute or traumatic, which is usually the result of a sudden impact or unseen force; and repetitive overuse such as swinging a racket or a golf club. In fact, virtually every workout results in micro-injuries as the body is torn down and then rebuilt through rest and recovery.

As a society, we have been conditioned to believe that symptoms are bad and that the key to health and recovery is their removal.

However, symptoms are actually part of the body`s healing and repair process.

Symptoms represent the body’s best efforts to heal itself. By treating symptoms, you are suppressing the body’s natural response and inhibiting the healing process. Instead of treating symptoms, doctors should stimulate the body’s defenses to allow for completion of the healing process.” 6

Dr. Stephen Cummings

If you had a fire in your house, you would not cut off the alarm and then relax, thinking that the fire is gone. The same thing happens to your body when you continue to ignore or mask symptoms. This is why athletes often develop chronic injuries.

"Many treatments, compounds and medications claim to speed the rate of healing. I have not read a single scientific article that demonstrates that healing time can be increased artificially. You cannot beat nature. All doctors can do is to be very careful that they do not slow down the natural healing process." 7

William Southmayd, MD

Chiropractic`s focus on the nervous system and postural biomechanics allow the body to function properly and to heal itself. The healing process always occurs from within the body, but research has shown that Chiropractic has an amazing potential to assist the body in the recovery process.

"The quality of healing is directly proportional to the functional capability of the nervous system to send and receive nerve messages" 8

Journal of Neurological Science

More sports-related non-fatal injuries are treated in hospital emergency departments than any other type of unintentional injury. Standard medical procedures may be necessary when an athlete is injured. Traditional medical professionals specialize in the management and care of fractures, dislocations, lacerations and damaged tendons and ligaments. However, many athletes leave the hospital with as much spinal stress (subluxations) as they were suffering from when they entered.

Doctors of Chiropractic focus on the entire structure of the body rather than just the obviously injured part. For this reason, they can often detect and help to prevent an injury that might normally be overlooked or ignored.

"You obviously cannot compete at your fullest if you are not in alignment and your body cannot heal itself properly if your spine is not in alignment.”

Dan O`Brien, Olympic Decathlete

"Chiropractic has really helped me to keep my body in line to help my body recover"

Chris Carter, Minnesota Vikings

"Chiropractic has helped keep me injury free--that is half the trick to staying in competition"

Lee Labrada, Mr. Universe

"The best way to use Chiropractic is not only after injuries, but before they occur"

Arnold Schwarzenegger, 7 time Mr. Olympia

Because Doctors of Chiropractic are experts in the field of human biomechanics, they are very aware of proper posture and movement. By observing an athlete in action, a Chiropractor can often detect and prevent a structural problem that can lead to injury or poor performance.

Athletic injures are often caused by improper biomechanics or muscle imbalances within the spine.

"Chiropractic has helped thousands of athletes, professional and amateur, overcome an injury without resorting to surgery”. 9

SPORTS MEDICINE

Athletes have also discovered that Chiropractic care allows them to achieve an optimal level of performance when training and competing in their respective sporting event. A proper biomechanical structure allows athletes to achieve and maintain their optimal level of performance-safely and naturally. There is a growing body of research and case studies, which clearly show the relationship between Chiropractic care and athletic performance.

A Canadian research team included Chiropractic care in the rehabilitation program of sixteen injured female long distance runners. Not only did these runners recover quickly, seven of them actually scored "personal best" performances while under Chiropractic care. 10

The extent of Chiropractic`s "winning edge" was tested on fifty athletes who were divided into a control group and a group, which added Chiropractic care to their usual training procedures. After six weeks, the group under Chiropractic care scored significantly better on standard tests of athletic ability. When tested on their reaction time, the control group demonstrated less than one percent improvement, while the Chiropractic group achieved reaction times more than eighteen percent faster than their initial scores. 11

A landmark research effort from the New Zealand School of Chiropractic and the University of Auckland, has evaluated the effects chiropractic adjustments may have on reaction times. Two groups were tested to study variations in reaction times; one group received spinal adjustments, while the other group, only receiving a short period of rest, acted as a control group for comparison.

There was a marked improvement for the group that received an adjustment over the group that got nothing but rest. The group that got only a rest period did show an average decrease in reaction time: 58 milliseconds, an 8% faster reaction time. The group that received the chiropractic adjustment showed a decrease in reaction time of 97 milliseconds, representing a 14.8% faster reaction time. 12

The implications for these findings are far reaching for any activity in the “game of life,” and the data can objectively support anecdotal evidence of enhanced athletic performance under chiropractic care. The ability to react more quickly to any of the demands life can impose provides added performance enhancement benefits for athletes, who rely on optimum reaction reflexes to perform at their maximum competitive capacity. Field based practice experiences indicate that chiropractic care appears to both enhance an athlete’s ability to perform and to recover from injuries when they occur; this study provides objective evidence that a vital component of athletic performance—rapid reaction time—is markedly improved through the chiropractic adjustment.

It is estimated that 30 million children now participate in organized sports including soccer, football, swimming, gymnastics, hockey, skating and baseball. Correspondingly, as participation increases, injuries increase. Sports injuries to young people now exceed the occurrence of infectious disease. 13

More than 700,000 children under the age of 15 are taken to the hospital emergency room for treatment of sports-related injuries. In fact, children between the ages 11-15 account for 55% of all sports-related injuries that require hospitalization.14

Sports and recreational activities account for 4.3 million or 36% of all injuries to children in the United States.15

                                        AMERICAN FAMILY PHYSICIAN

The increase in emergency-related injuries for children includes well-known injuries such as broken arms and twisted ankles-these injuries are certainly not new. What is new; however, are the types of children’s sports injuries seldom seen in past generations. They are overuse injuries caused by small, but repetitive injuries to the body’s tissues, joints and spinal column resulting in chronic health conditions.

Chiropractic Active Life Plan

Chiropractic adjustments for children of all ages are of tremendous benefit for the treatment and prevention of injuries and to maximize performance potential.

Chiropractic’s focus on the spine and nervous system is also important for children, since it is their nervous system, which controls their entire growth and development.

Nerve Cell Damage in Mammalian Brain after Exposure to Microwaves from GSM Mobile Phones

Environmental Health Perspectives Vol. 111, No. 7, June 2003 pp. 881-883

Environmental Health Perspectives (EHP) is a monthly journal of peer-reviewed research and news on the impact of the environment on human health. These authors are from the Dept. of Neurosurgery, Lund University Hospital, Sweden.

Leif G. Salford, Arne E. Brun, Jacob L. Eberhardt, Lars Malmgren, Bertil

R. R. Persson

FROM ABSTRACT

The possible risks of radio-frequency electromagnetic fields for the human body is a growing concern for our society. We have previously shown that weak pulsed microwaves give rise to a significant leakage of albumin through the blood-brain barrier.

In this study we investigated whether a pathologic leakage across the blood-brain barrier might be combined with damage to the neurons.

Three groups each of eight rats were exposed for 2 hr to Global System for Mobile Communications (GSM) mobile phone electromagnetic fields of different strengths. We found highly significant evidence for neuronal damage in the cortex, hippocampus, and basal ganglia in the brains of exposed rats.

THESE AUTHORS ALSO NOTE:

³The voluntary exposure of the brain to microwaves from hand-held mobile phones by one-fourth of the world`s population has been called the largest human biologic experiment ever.²

³In the near future, microwaves will also be emitted by an abundance of other appliances in the cordless office and also in the home.²

The risks of microwaves for the human body has been studied since the 1960s when radar and microwave ovens posed a possible health problem. Studies demonstrated that very low energy levels caused a significant leakage of proteins from the capillaries into the surrounding cerebellar brain tissue. Recent studies (2000) have shown that EMF at 1.8 GHz increase the permeability of the blood-brain barrier to sucrose.

³In series of more than 1,600 animals, we have proven that subthermal power densities from both pulse-modulated and continuous RF EMFs--including those from GSM (Global System for Mobile Communications) mobile phones--have the potency to significantly open the blood-brain barrier such that the animals` own albumin passes out of the bloodstream into the brain tissue and accumulates in the neurons and glial cells surrounding the capillaries.² These results have been duplicated by others.

These authors and others ³have pointed out that when such a relatively large molecule as albumin can pass the blood-brain barrier, so too can many other smaller molecules, including toxic ones, which may escape into the brain because of exposure to RF EMFs.² [Important]

This study investigated whether leakage across the blood-brain barrier might cause damage to the neurons.

In this study of exposure, ³A genuine GSM mobile phone with a programmable power output² was used. ³The peak output power of 10 mW, 100 mW, and 1,000 mW per cell from the GSM mobile telephone² was used. The fourth group of rats was kept unexposed for 2 hr. ³The animals were awake during the exposure and could move and turn within the exposure chamber.²

The animals in each exposure group were kept alive for about 50 days after exposure, and then were anesthetized and sacrificed, and their brains were removed and stained.

In this study, ³Changed neurons were seen in all locations, but especially the cortex, hippocampus, and basal ganglia, mixed in among normal neurons. The percentage abnormal neurons is roughly appreciated to be maximally around 2%, but in some restricted areas they dominated the picture.² The changes in neurons showed a ³significant positive relation with EMF dosage.² [Important]

³We present here for the first time evidence for neuronal damage caused by nonthermal microwave exposure. The cortex as well as the hippocampus and the basal ganglia in the brains of exposed rats contained damaged neurons. We realize that our study comprises few animals, but the combined results are highly significant and exhibit a clear dose-response relation.²

The findings in this study ³would seem to indicate serious neuronal damage, which may be mediated through organelle damage with release of not only hydrolytic lysosomal enzymes but also, for example, sequestered harmful material, such as heavy metals, stored away in cytoplasmic organelles (lysosomes).² [WOW!]

These authors note that from previous studies, the initial albumin leakage into the brain tissue was observed within hours in 40% of exposed animals, and continued for 8 weeks after the exposure. This leakage is probably subsequent to a breach of the blood-brain barrier.

These authors chose 12-26 week-old rats because they are comparable with human teenagers‹³notably frequent users of mobile phones.²

³The situation of the growing brain might deserve special concern from society because biologic and maturational processes are particularly vulnerable during the growth process. The intense use of mobile phones by youngsters is a serious consideration. A neuronal damage of the kind described here may not have immediately demonstrable consequences. In the long run, it may result in reduced brain reserve capacity that might be unveiled by other later neuronal disease or even the wear and tear of aging. We cannot exclude that after some decades of (often) daily use, a whole generation of users may suffer negative effects, perhaps as early as in middle age.²

KEY POINTS FROM DAN MURPHY:

1) The voluntary exposure of the brain to microwaves from hand-held mobile phones by one-fourth of the world`s population is the largest human biologic experiment ever.

2) In the near future, microwaves will also be emitted by an abundance of other appliances in the cordless office and home.

3) Importantly, this study used standard current generation cell phones and exposed rats to their EMFs only one time, for 2 continuous hours.

4) In these rats, at common exposures of human teenagers, there was significant leakage of protein and sugar through the blood-brain barrier, combined with damage to the neurons in the cortex, hippocampus, and basal ganglia.

5) There was a significant and clear dose-response to cell phone EMF exposure and neuronal damage. This means the longer the exposure the greater the damage.

6) If a large molecule like albumin can pass through the blood-brain barrier after cell phone EMF exposure, then many other smaller toxic molecules can also do so.

7) The serious neuronal damage documented in this study is probably related to organelle injury, which can release sequestered harmful heavy metal toxins.

8) The damage caused by cell phone EMF exposure can be seen within hours of exposure.

9) Growing brains are more vulnerable to cell phone EMF exposure.

10) The neuronal damage documented in this study may not be immediately demonstrable in humans, but may later reduced the brain¹s function, resulting in neuronal disease and accelerated brain aging.

11) After decades of cell phone use, a whole generation of users may suffer negative effects, perhaps as early as in middle age.

12) This study presents for the first time evidence for neuronal damage caused by nonthermal cell phone microwave exposure.

From Jay Gordon MD.

David Kirby asks fascinating questions and Janet Grillo, in telling her son’s story, offers some answers but asks a few more questions. No, Mr. Kirby, we cannot find a large number of 25 to 55 year-old adults with autism because they are not there to be found: Autism has grown to epidemic proportion over the past twenty-five years.

The “triggers” to this huge increase (from 1 case/5000 in 1980 to 1/166 in 2005) undoubtedly include mercury. Mercury from vaccines is a very likely culprit and the most recent studies support this. Conflicting analyses do exist. Most of the doctors and researchers involved in denying that vaccines cause autism are recipients of large sums -— millions of dollars in some cases -— from the vaccine industry.

My favorite explanation for the increased numbers of children with autism is the implication that doctors are much better at making the diagnosis than they used to be. I asked my wife, "Do you think I seem 800% smarter than I was twenty years ago??" After a little work with a paper and pencil the number she showed me was a minus 23%.

Honest doctors will eventually “break” this case.

THE MOMMY TEST

I was out walking with my 4 year old daughter. She picked up
something off the ground and started to put it in her mouth.
I took the item away from her and I asked her not to do
that. "Why?" my daughter asked.

"Because it`s been laying outside, you don`t know where it`s
been, it`s dirty and probably has germs" I replied.

At this point, my daughter looked at me with total admiration
and asked, `Wow! How do you know all this stuff?"

"Uh,".... I was thinking quickly, "All moms know this stuff.
It`s on the Mommy Test. You have to know it, or they don`t
let you be a Mommy."

We walked along in silence for 2 or 3 minutes, but she was
evidently pondering this new information.

"OH...I get it!" she beamed, "So if you don`t pass the test
you have to be the daddy."

"Exactly" I replied back with a big smile on my face and joy
in my heart.

The Dying Woman in Room 402
A story for all the people who could use a little encouragement today

Updated: 1:33 p.m. ET May 19, 2005

May 19 - It was early in my friendship with Tommy Hartman, the priest. My wife, Betty, who freely admits to being the only woman in the world married to both a rabbi and a priest, was in Houston visiting her sister and I called up Tommy and asked him if he wanted to go out for a pizza and beer. He was happy to get out of his priest bunker and go.

When I picked him up and asked were he wanted to go, he said, “ North Shore Hospital .” I said, “I don`t think their pizza is that good, and I don`t think their liquor license came through.” He replied, “I want to go there first because there is a woman in room 402 who is dying of breast cancer. I want to see her and pray for her before she dies.”

I am compassionate plenty during the week—plenty—and I am even compassionate for my congregants late on Tuesday night. But on Saturday night I need time with Betty and friends in order to fuel up for another week of explaining how people should not blame their pain and suffering on The Boss. So it was with some reticence that I agreed to accompany Tommy. What can you do when your best friend is a living saint?

The woman in room 402 was alone and sitting on the edge of her bed staring blankly out the window as if in a daze. Tommy said hello and I hung out by the door. I was thinking, “Mushroom, extra cheese, onions …” OK, I admit it: I need work on the compassion side, but as I said before, it was Saturday night.

Tommy quietly and respectfully sat down on a chair next to the woman, held her hands gently in his hands, and said, just like this, “Dear, you are going to die, but you have nothing to fear because God is going to hold your soul in his hands like a little bird.”

I was stunned. I had never seen such courageous honesty in talking to a dying person. My personal technique up to that evening watching Tommy, was to breeze into the room, smile and say, “Hey how ya doin? You look great! Well I have to be going now.” Tommy just went straight into the truth without hesitation and without fear. It took my breath away.

Then Tommy asked her, “Dear, are you still afraid?” She was crying her eyes out and could barely blurt out the words, “Yes, Father, I am afraid now.” Then Tommy repeated his healing spiel complete with the reference to God and the little bird (which he pantomimed for her by cupping his hands to show her just exactly how God was going to hold her soul in his hands like a little bird). Then Tommy asked her again if she was still afraid and all she could do was nod her head and breathlessly say, “Yes, I am still afraid.”  Tommy then asked her, “Why are you still afraid dear? Why are you afraid?”

The woman in room 402 then recovered enough composure to answer my best friend. She sobbed, “I am afraid because I just came into this hospital for a hernia operation! What are you talking about? Why am I going to die? ”

Tommy, without missing a beat, rose and said to her, “Well then, you are not going to die!”

I was on the floor laughing so hard I thought I might die, repeating over and over, “Like a little bird … like a little bird.”

Tommy came over to me and said in an urgent voice, “Marc, I think we have to leave now.”

The woman was pressing the call button like it was a detonator; Tommy pulled me out of the room by my feet. We ran down the hall outracing the security guys; we laid rubber screeching out of the parking lot. Over several beers and no pizza, Tommy looked at me quizzically and said these words which have sustained me personally through many screw ups. I offer Tommy`s words now to everyone everywhere who has done the best job they can, but even so it all just went to hell for some reasons they should have known and for some reasons they could not have known.…

Tommy said, “Maybe the dying woman was in room 502.”

A little girl had been shopping with her Mom in Wal-Mart. She must have been 6 years old, this beautiful red haired, freckle faced image of  innocence. It was pouring outside. The kind of rain that gushes over the top of rain gutters, so much in a hurry to hit the earth it has no time to flow down the spout. We all stood there under the awning and just inside the door of the Wal-Mart.

We waited, some patiently, others irritated because nature messed up their hurried day. I am always mesmerized by rainfall. I got lost in the sound and sight of the heavens washing away the dirt and dust of the world. Memories of running, splashing so carefree as a child came pouring in as a welcome reprieve from the worries of my day.

The little voice was so sweet as it broke the hypnotic trance we were all caught in "Mom, let`s run through the rain," she said. "What?" Mom asked. "Let `s run through the rain!" She repeated.

"No, honey. We`ll wait until it slows down a bit," Mom replied.

This young child waited about another minute and repeated: "Mom, let`s run through the rain," "We`ll get soaked if we do," Mom said. "No, we won`t, Mom. That`s not what you said this morning," the young girl said as she tugged at her Mom`s arm. This morning? When did I say we could run through the rain and not get wet?

"Don`t you remember? When you were talking to Daddy about his cancer, you said, `If God can get us through this, he can get us through anything!"

The entire crowd stopped dead silent.. I swear you couldn`t hear anything but the rain. We all stood silently. No one came or left in the next few minutes.

Mom paused and thought for a moment about what she would say. Now some would laugh it off and scold her for being silly. Some might even ignore what was said. But this was a moment of affirmation in a young child`s life. A time when innocent trust can be nurtured so that it will bloom into faith.

"Honey, you are absolutely right. Let`s run through the rain. If GOD let`s us get wet, well maybe we just needed washing," Mom said.

Then off they ran. We all stood watching, smiling and laughing as they darted past the cars and yes, through the puddles. They held their shopping bags over their heads just in case. They got soaked. But they were followed by a few who screamed and laughed like children all the way to their cars. And yes, I did. I ran. I got wet. I needed washing.

Circumstances or people can take away your material possessions, they can take away your money, and they can take away your health. But no one can ever take away your precious memories...So, don`t forget to make time and take the opportunities to make memories everyday. To everything there is a season and a time to every purpose under heaven.

A friend sent this to me to remind me of life. Hope you enjoy it. I HOPE YOU STILL TAKE THE TIME TO RUN THROUGH THE RAIN.

For those of you who are lucky to still be blessed with your Mom, this is beautiful. For those who aren`t, this is even more beautiful.

Mothers Journey

The young mother set her foot on the path of life. "Is this the long way?" she asked. And the guide said "Yes, and the way is hard, You will be old before you reach the end of it, however, the end will be better than the beginning"

But, the young mother was happy, and she wouldn`t believe that anything could be better than these years. So she played with her children, she fed them, bathed them, taught them how to tie their shoes, ride a bike, reminded them to feed the dog, do their homework and brush their teeth.

The sun shone on them, and the young Mother cried, "Nothing will ever be lovelier than this."

Then the nights came, and the storms, and the path was sometimes dark, and the children shook with fear and cold, the mother drew them close and covered them with her arms, the children said, "Mother, we are not afraid, for you are near, and no harm can come to us."

The morning came, and there was a hill ahead, the children climbed and grew weary, the mother also grew weary. But at all times she said to the children, "A little patience and we will be there."

So the children climbed, and as they climbed they learned to weather the storms. With this, she gave them strength to face the world.

Year after year, she showed them compassion, understanding, and hope, but, most of all she gave them unconditional love. When they reached the top they said, "Mother, we wouldn`t have done it without you."

The days went on, the weeks, the months and the years, the mother grew old and she became little and bent. But, her children were tall and strong; and walked with courage.

The mother, when she lay down at night, looked up at the stars and said, "This is a better day than the last, for my children have learned so much and are now passing these traits on to their children."

When the way became rough for her, they lifted her, and gave her their strength, just as she had given them hers.

One day they came to a hill, beyond the hill they could see a shining road with a golden gates flung wide. And the mother said: "I have reached the end of my journey and now I know the end is truly better than the beginning.

My children and grandchildren can walk with dignity and pride, with their heads held high." The children said, " You will always walk with us, Mother, even when you have gone through the gates."

They stood and watched her as she went on alone, and the gates closed after her. They said: "We cannot see her, but she is with us still. A mother like ours is more than a memory. She is a living presence."

Your Mother is always with you. She is the whisper of the leaves as you walk down the street. She is the smell of the cooking of certain foods you remember. She is the flowers you pick. She is the scent of that special perfume she wore. She is the cool hand on your brow when you`re not feeling well. She is your breath in the air on a cold winter`s day. She is the sound of the rain that lulls you to sleep She is the colors of a rainbow. She is Christmas morning.

Your Mother lives inside your laughter, and she is crystallized in every tear drop.

A mother has known every emotion: happiness, sadness, fear, jealousy, love, hate, anger, helplessness, excitement, joy, sorrow, and all the while, hoping and praying you will only know the good feelings in life.

She`s the place you came from, your first home, she`s the map you follow with every step you take. She is the one you run to when you are scared. Her arms are always open to hold you and console you. She`s your first love, your first friend, even your first enemy, but nothing on earth can separate you. Not time, not space, not even death!

A lecturer, when explaining stress management to an audience, raised a glass of water and asked, "how heavy is this glass of water? " Answers called out ranged from 20g to 500g. The lecturer replied, "The absolute weight doesn`t matter. It depends on how long you try to hold it. "If I hold it for a minute, that`s not a problem. If I hold it for an hour, I`ll have an ache in my right arm. If I hold it for a day, you`ll have to call an ambulance. "In each case, it`s the same weight, but the longer I hold it, the heavier it becomes. "He continued, "And that`s the way it is with stress management. If we carry our burdens all the time, sooner or later, as the burden becomes increasingly heavy, we won`t be able to carry on. "  "As with the glass of water, you have to put it down for a while and rest before holding it again. When we`re refreshed, we can carry on with the burden. " "So, before you return home tonight, put the burden of work down. Don`t carry it home. You can pick it up tomorrow. Whatever burdens you`re carrying now, let them down for a moment if you can. "  "Relax; pick them up later after you`ve rested. Life is short.

To Be Popular

==============

Perhaps the most arresting bit of personal advice I ever encountered was this:

If you want to be popular, live so that a blind person would like you. The point is that lasting popularity depends not on having good looks or other surface personality traits but upon inner qualities that somehow communicate themselves to others. Such qualities include a friendly voice, a sense of humor, kindness, thoughtfulness of the other fellow`s tender ego, sincere praise, gratitude and encouragement.

How well would a blind person like you?
